NEO GEO AES Plus Delayed to September 2027. It's Official, and I Was Wrong

Updated September 11, 2026. Back in July I wrote that the NEO GEO AES+ had not been delayed, because that’s what Plaion told the press at the time. On September 9, Plaion announced the delay themselves. This post has been rewritten to reflect that. My original July article is preserved at the bottom, unedited, because I said I’d update rather than just post a new story, and I meant it.

On September 9, PLAION REPLAI confirmed the worldwide release date for the entire NEOGEO AES+ range moves from November 12, 2026 to Thursday, September 16, 2027. That’s about a ten month slip, and it takes the console out of this holiday season entirely.

Their reasoning, in short: the response to the announcement blew past what they planned for, global component supply is tight, and they can’t build enough systems to do a proper worldwide launch. Rather than ship with almost nothing on shelves, they’re taking the extra year to expand production and lock in parts. Commercial Director Ben Jones called it “not the announcement we hoped to make” and said the enthusiasm gave them confidence to think bigger about the platform’s future.

I’m not going to pretend that doesn’t sting. I’ve got an Ultimate Edition on pre-order direct from Plaion and a standalone system on Amazon as a backup, specifically so I could get one early and make content with it. That plan just moved a year to the right.

What This Means For Your Pre-Order

The short version is that you don’t have to do anything.

Pre-orders stay open through participating retailers and the Plaion Replai store (No telling how long this will last)
Existing orders remain secure and keep their priority place in the production queue
No action required from you
No price increase. Plaion committed to launching at the announced prices despite the component pressure
Everything moves together. All three editions and all ten launch carts shift to the same date

Future production gets allocated in sequence as their manufacturing capacity grows if I’m reading this correctly, so being early in the queue actually means something now.

The Founding Supporter Bonus

Here’s the sweetener. Every console shipped from the launch production run will include a Founding Supporter Bonus, and I’ve already learned what this is.

It will be a free Neo Geo Gamepad for Standard and Anniversary, and a 30% future single game discount for Ultimate Edition.

I find this last part particularly odd, because the controller has more monetary value than than the 30% off coupon. The only theory I can come up with for this is that the Ultimate Edition is already heavily discounted and they couldn’t afford the margin of including another controller.

About That Email In July

I need to own this part properly.

Back in July a screenshot went around of a customer service email from Nojima Online, one of the official Japanese pre-order retailers. It told a customer that orders were suspended and the AES+ release had been postponed to September 17, 2027.

I wrote a post saying it wasn’t true. I wasn’t guessing. Plaion told Western press directly that the delay had been attached to the wrong product and that only The Spectrum’s Thermal Printer bundle had moved. That was the strongest thing on the record and I went with it.

Now look at the two dates.

Nojima said September 17, 2027. Plaion just announced September 16, 2027.

That is not a coincidence. That’s a one day difference, which is about what you’d expect between a publisher’s global street date and a Japanese retailer’s local shipping date. Whatever Nojima got in July was the real schedule, months before it was public.

So the honest read is that somebody at Plaion knew in July, a notice went out through the Japanese distribution chain before the company was ready to announce it, and the official line to press was a denial that didn’t hold. I can’t prove which of those it was. Nobody has explained it, and I doubt anybody will.

But that customer who forwarded their email to social media in July? They were right, and a lot of people, me included, told them they weren’t.

What I’d Do Differently

I’m leaving my July post up at the bottom of this page rather than deleting it. That was the deal I made in it.

The lesson I’m actually taking from this isn’t “don’t trust publishers.” It’s narrower than that. When a retailer’s system says one thing and a publisher’s PR says another, the retailer is reading off an actual logistics database and the publisher is managing a message. I weighted those backwards.

Next time I’ll report both and let it sit unresolved rather than picking the official line and calling it settled.

Where The Platform Goes From Here

It’s not all bad news, depending on how you look at it.

Tokyo Game Show 2026 is the next real milestone. Plaion says visitors will get hands-on with the hardware and hear more about the software roadmap. That’s this month, so we’ll have actual impressions soon rather than marketing copy.

Plaion also says it’s in discussion with other licensors to bring more games to the platform. Right now we have ten launch carts. A longer runway plus more licensing conversations points at a bigger library than what was originally on the table.

Whether a year of waiting is worth a deeper catalog is your call. For a machine built on the idea that you’d still be buying carts for it in 2030, it’s at least a coherent trade.

The Hardware, Unchanged

None of the delay changes what the machine is. If you’re new here, I broke the whole thing down in my original NEO GEO AES+ rundown.

The pitch from SNK and Plaion Replai has been the same since day one: No Emulation, No Compromise, No Comparison. Plaion says it runs on newly manufactured chips based on the originals. Not software emulation.

NEO GEO AES Plus delayed to September 2027 is simply NOT TRUE

I’ve got skin in this one. I have the Ultimate Edition on pre-order straight from Plaion, and I also grabbed a standalone system on Amazon as a backup, purely so I can get a unit in my hands as early as possible and start making content with it. So believe me, I chased this one down fast.

Good news: nothing moved.

The console is still coming November 12, 2026, exactly like it always was. Plaion has said so directly.

But this one isn’t as simple as somebody making something up, and I want to walk through it properly, because there’s a real document at the bottom of this and it deserves an honest explanation.

Where This Thing Started

It started with a screenshot posted to social media. The claim was that the AES+ had slipped from November of this year out to September of next year, that orders had been suspended, and that anybody who preordered should have gotten an email about it.

And here’s the part that makes this more interesting than your average rumor: the screenshot is real.

It’s a customer service email from Nojima Online, a legitimate Japanese electronics retailer and one of the official AES+ preorder outlets from launch day, right alongside Amazon Japan, Rakuten Books, Bic Camera and Yodobashi. The email apologizes to the customer, says the manufacturer notified them that orders were suspended and the release postponed, and gives a specific new date: September 17, 2027.

That’s not somebody typing nonsense into a group chat. That’s a real store telling a real customer their order moved.

Here’s the email translated into English, with the order number redacted:

We will ship the product as soon as it arrives, so could we please ask you to wait a while longer?

If you purchased multiple items under the same order number, please note in advance that due to our system’s specifications, shipment will occur only once all items are in stock.

Because split shipments cannot be accommodated, if you would like the items other than the delayed one shipped first, we apologize for the inconvenience, but please email us to request a partial cancellation of the delayed item. We will then arrange shipment of the items already in stock.

Read that and you can see why people took it seriously. It’s specific, it’s apologetic, it names the manufacturer as the source, and it gives an exact date. That’s not the shape of a hoax.

So the skepticism people had was healthy, but it wasn’t because the source looked flimsy. It was because the story didn’t line up with anything else. Nobody outside Japan had gotten an email. Plaion’s own storefronts still said November 12. Every Western retailer still said November 12. Something didn’t add up.

What Plaion Actually Said

Plaion Replai got asked about it directly and shut it down flat: the delay got attached to the wrong product.

The AES+ has not been delayed. It’s launching this year, on schedule, no changes.

The thing that is delayed is The Spectrum, another one of Plaion’s hardware reissues. Specifically the Thermal Printer bundle for it, which has moved into next year.

So How Did a Real Store Send a Real Email About the Wrong Console?

Plaion’s statement explains the mix-up but doesn’t explain the mechanics of it. Somewhere in the chain between Plaion and a Japanese retailer’s customer service inbox, a delay notice got attached to the wrong product line. Maybe the distributor bulletin listed the wrong SKUs. Maybe Nojima’s team read it wrong. Either is an easy mistake to make when a publisher is juggling several hardware reissues at once and the notices come through as product codes rather than names.

But I want to be clear that nobody has actually said that out loud. Plaion’s clarification went to Western press. As of right now I can’t find a retraction from Nojima, and I can’t find anything from Plaion Japan addressing the Japanese emails specifically. Nojima’s AES+ product pages are currently showing sold out with no 2027 date posted anywhere on them, which is at least consistent with the notice not reflecting reality, but that’s me reading a storefront, not a statement.

So: Plaion says on the record that the AES+ is not delayed. That’s the strongest thing anybody has said, and I’m going with it. If a Japanese retailer issues a correction, or if it turns out Japan genuinely is running on a different calendar, I’ll update this post rather than quietly memory-hole it.

Worth knowing if you’re shopping: the Anniversary Edition is sold out on Amazon right now, so the Plaion Replai store is your route for that one. The Ultimate has always been store-exclusive.

Why It Spread as Fast as It Did

Beyond the fact that it came with a receipt attached, the AES+ launch has genuinely been rocky, just not in the way the notice claimed. Embracer’s Lars Wingefors confirmed the console’s entire planned annual volume sold out inside 24 hours of preorders opening. Twenty-four hours.

Then in the spring, U.S. and Canadian buyers hit a wall trying to order direct from Plaion Replai, because that flood of demand triggered state-by-state tax registration requirements nobody had planned for on a European storefront. Plaion pointed North America at Amazon for the Standard and Anniversary while they sorted out compliance. The Ultimate stayed store-exclusive and sat unavailable for a while.

So there was already a file open labeled “AES+ logistics problems.” A delay notice slotted into that shape well enough that plenty of people took it seriously, and honestly, they were right to check.

The Refresher, For Anyone Just Tuning In

Nothing. That’s the answer. Nothing.

If you preordered, your order stands. If you never got a delay email, it’s because there was never a delay to email you about.

A few things worth keeping in your back pocket, though:

Your order confirmation beats anybody’s timeline. Check the ship date your retailer gave you. That’s the truth for your unit.
A real screenshot can still be wrong. This one came from an actual retailer, and it was still incorrect. Retailer notices come from distributors, distributors get bulletins, and things get mislabeled. When a store and the publisher disagree, the publisher is the one who knows what’s on the production line.
